Securing your dream job

Finding your dream job can be a lengthy and tiresome experience but we have some tips which may help you get ahead of the pack.

It is important when looking for a job that you are aware of your likes, dislikes, career aspirations and limitations.  This will help you narrow down jobs to apply for, saving you precious time in the jobsearching process.

Here are some things to consider when looking for a job or if you're thinking about changing to a new career path:

  • Know yourself - your aptitude, skills, personality, the level of responsibility you are comfortable with, your interests, your needs (emotionally, physically and financially), your priorities.
  • Which career is right for you - analytic or scientific, helping or advising, organising or clerical, creative or artistic, nature or recreation, practical or mechanical, persuading or service jobs.
  • If you're thinking of a career change, perhaps organise some leave and secure some work experience in the field you're thinking of.  A week or so in the industry may provide some invaluable insight into whether it's for you or whether you're not cut out for it after all.  If you're unable to take leave from your current job, perhaps try volunteering after hours or on the weekends.
  • Ask family and friends what your strengths are and what job/career they think you should pursue - often people closest to you see strengths you haven't even identified.
  • Do some research about the field you would like to get into - you should be well equipped with the facts about salary range, training opportunities, working conditions and hours,, what personal qualities are needed for the job, what are the good and bad aspects of the job/industry.
